Cortes (elbow) will be throwing for the first time since being shut down on September 25 with his flexor strain. It’s unlikely that Cortes will return during the Yankees’ postseason run, but he hasn’t completely been ruled out just yet.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Alex Verdugo will start again in left field against the Royals in Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday.

Verdugo got the start in Game 1 and drove in the go-ahead run while going 2-for-3 in the victory. Jasson Dominguez will all-but-assuredly begin the game on the bench again. Verdugo struggled in the regular season, but it appears the Yankees want to go with the experienced option to begin the postseason.

Juan Soto went 3-for-5 in a win for the Yankees on Saturday in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Royals.

In addition to the three hits, Soto also made a throw to get Salvador Perez out at the plate in the second inning. He singled twice and added a double, and it’s the second three-hit game in the postseason in the 25-year-old’s already impressive career.

Gleyber Torres hit a two-run homer in a victory for the Yankees over the Royals in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday.

Torres also drew two walks and scored his second run on a bases-loaded walk to Austin Wells. The second baseman was excellent in September with an .859 OPS, and he’s now off to a strong start in the playoffs.

Luke Weaver got the final four outs to get a save and preserve a win for the Yankees over the Royals on Saturday in Game 1 of the ALDS in a 6-5 victory for New York.

Hard to imagine writing this analysis before the season started based on how bad Weaver looked in 2023, but here we are. Weaver struck out three and didn’t allow a hit while picking up his first postseason save. He threw 24 pitches, but with the Yankees and Royals getting Saturday off, he should be available for Game 2 in a save or high-leverage situation.

Gerrit Cole went five-plus innings while allowing four runs — three earned — in a a Game 1 no-decision against the Royals on Saturday in the ALDS.

Cole wasn’t anywhere close to great, as he had issues finishing off the Kansas City lineup and was pulled after a long leadoff single in the sixth inning. He allowed seven hits with two walks, and he struck out four with the big blow a two-run homer by MJ Melendez. Cole threw 80 pitches, so if the Yankees were so inclined, they could bring their ace back in Game 4 if necessary. Cole has normally been good in the postseason, but Saturday was a mediocre effort at best.

The Yankees are using Oswaldo Cabrera at first and Alex Verdugo in left in Game 1 against the Royals.

Verdugo over Jasson Domínguez was expected, but Cabrera over Ben Rice is a surprise. Cabrera didn’t play much in September, going 6-for-25 during the final month of the season. He made five starts at first base over the course of the year. The Yankees lineup: 2B Gleyber Torres, RF Juan Soto, CF Aaron Judge, C Austin Wells, DH Giancarlo Stanton, 3B Jazz Chisholm Jr., SS Anthony Volpe, 1B Cabrera, LF Verdugo.
Jake Cousins

Jake Cousins, who missed the end of the season with a strained pectroral muscle, is on the Yankees’ ALDS roster.

Marcus Stroman and Mark Leiter Jr. are absent, as the Yankees have chosen to go with 11 pitches. That opens up an extra spot on offense for Duke Ellis to serve as a pinch-runner. Ben Rice is also on the roster in place of Anthony Rizzo. DJ LeMahieu was not activated.

This isn’t a huge surprise. While the Yankees maintained that Jasson Dominguez would play everyday once he was called up, that wasn’t the case. Assuming the Yankees use their best hitting lineup with Aaron Judge in center, Juan Soto in right and Giancarlo Stanton at DH, Dominguez will find himself on the bench with Verdugo in left field to begin the playoffs.

Anthony Rizzo told reports that he won’t be on the roster for the ALDS, but remains optimistic that he could return for the ALCS if the Yankees advance.

Rizzo was deemed a “long shot” by both manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman in recent days. The Yankees are likely to go with Ben Rice and potentially DJ LeMahieu at first base if the latter is healthy enough to make the roster. It remains to be seen if Rizzo will be able to make it back for the ALCS if the Yankees advance, but the first baseman is optimistic about his chances.
